The Investigative Directorate of the Russian Investigative Committee for the Republic of Dagestan said it had launched a “terrorist investigation” into the attack under the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, CNN reported. Attacks were reported on churches, synagogues and police traffic stops in the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala. Let us tell you that these two cities are located at a distance of 120 kilometers (75 miles).

“All the circumstances of the incident and the people involved in the terrorist attack are being identified,” the Directorate of Investigation said in its statement. According to local officials, seven law enforcement officers, a priest and a church security guard were involved in the attack. According to the Russian news agency TASS, four “terrorists” were also killed in the attack.

“According to the information I received, Father Nikolay was killed in a church in Derbent, his throat was cut, and he was 66 years old and very sick,” said Shamil Khadulev, chairman of the Dagestan Public Monitoring Commission.

TASS cited Dagestan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs as saying that 19 people barricaded themselves in a room for safety during a shooting at a church in Makhachkala, in which at least one attacker was killed. Meanwhile, a synagogue in Derbent caught fire.

The head of the Republic of Dagestan, Sergey Melikov, issued a statement on Telegram. In the statement he said that “unknown persons tried to destabilize the social situation. Police officers of Dagestan stood in their way. According to preliminary information, the victims include them.”

Melikov said the attackers are being identified, an operational headquarters has been created and a plan for a counter-operation “interception” is being worked on. Calling on people to remain calm, Sergei Melikov said, “Panic and fear is what they expected… They won’t get it from these Dagestanis!” Israel’s foreign ministry called it a “joint attack” on the two synagogues.
