27515 Kg Explosives, 100 People: 394 Meter Long Tunnel of Bullet Train Built in Record Time

India’s bullet train will run between Ahmedabad and Mumbai. The work of the first phase of this project is going on at a fast pace. In which a 100 km long bridge has been prepared. Pillars have been erected up to 250 km. Within a record 6 months, excavation for a 394 meter long tunnel in Navi Mumbai has been completed. Completion of the Additional Driven Intermediate Tunnel (ADIT) at Ghansoli will accelerate the construction of the 21-km-long tunnel between Bandra-Kurla Complex and Shilphata in Maharashtra, officials of the National High Speed ​​Rail Corporation Limited said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe inaugurated the project on 14 September 2017 in Ahmedabad. The project has been named Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed ​​Rail Corridor. Excavation of the tunnel for the bullet train began on 6 December 2023.

The journey of 508 km will be completed in 3 hours
The bullet train running between Mumbai and Ahmedabad will cover a distance of 508 km in three hours. At present, the distance between Mumbai and Ahmedabad by normal train is 7-8 hours. If it halts at 4 stations Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara it will complete the journey in two hours. In this case the average speed will be 254 km/h.

27515 kg of blast was used for excavation
Officials of the National High Speed ​​Rail Corporation Limited informed that the ADIT has an incline of 26 meters. 27515 kg of explosives were used to make it. This tunnel was prepared by blasting 214 times. Non-electric detonators were also used for this. During this time, non-electric appliances were installed to avoid the possibility of fire. A total of 100 people including staff and workers are working at the site. In this project, a total length of 21 km tunnel is to be constructed. In which 16 kilometers will be excavated with a boring machine. The 5 km tunnel will be built by New Austrian Tunneling.

The first section of the bullet train will be ready in August 2026, Railway Minister said on the progress of the work.

A 7 km section of the tunnel will pass under the sea
About 7 km of this tunnel will pass under the sea in Thane Creek. Currently 3 shafts are under construction at Savli near BKC, Vikhroli and Ghansoli. This shaft will help build a 16 km long tunnel using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM).
