Before entertaining the audience with his energetic performances, Irrfan Khan used to work as an AC mechanic. Irfan Khan was born on 7 January 1967 in Tonk, Rajasthan to a Muslim family of Pathan descent. His maternal uncle got him interested in acting. He was a theater artist in Jodhpur. After his MA in Jaipur, Irrfan took admission in NSD to study acting.
He revealed in an interview that when he was in Jaipur, he was giving tuition to children and charging Rs 25 from each child. When he came to Mumbai, he worked as an air conditioner mechanic and was in awe of his acting inspiration Rajesh Khanna’s house. Irrfan debuts with Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay! where he was offered a small role. However, her scenes were cut down in the final edit. After this he turned to television and acted in several shows on Doordarshan like Kahakshan, Chanakya, Bharat Ek Khoj, Sara Jahan Hamara, Banegi Apni Baat, Chandrakanta, Srikanth, Anugunj. His first Bollywood lead role was Rogue in 2005. After this he never looked back.
He appeared in the box office hits The Namesake and Life in a… Metro and then made a name for himself in Hollywood. Irrfan acted in many Hollywood blockbuster films like Slumdog Millionaire during his career. It earned more than 3000 crores at the box office. Jurassic World, The Amazing Spiderman and Life of Pi, all at the box office collected Rs. Earned more than 3000 crores. Not only in Hollywood, he also acted in many hits and blockbuster films in Bollywood like Hindi Medium, The Lunchbox, Piku, Angrezi Medium. He also won the National Film Award for Best Actor for the film Paan Singh Tomar, based on his biopic.
However, the actor passed away in 2020 at the age of 53 after suffering from a colon infection caused by neuroendocrine cancer. But he is remembered as one of the best actors of Indian cinema. His son Babil Khan has also followed his father’s path and is busy making his mark in Bollywood.
