A heat wave is about to hit Delhi, brace yourself for a sweltering 45 degrees at the end of the week.

Temperatures will gradually rise in many parts of North India till May 18 and touch 45 degrees by the end of the week.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heatwave conditions in the north and north-western states including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi from May 16 to May 18. According to the IMD forecast, temperatures are expected to rise in Delhi and surrounding states. Temperatures will rise gradually by May 18 in many parts of North India and touch 45 degrees by the end of the week.

Dry westerly and north-westerly winds have been blamed for the rise in the mercury, along with clear skies, northern states will witness direct sunshine from Thursday. An IMD official said, “The mercury has been rising in Delhi for the past few days and is expected to continue rising till the end of the week as there is no western disturbance. The mercury is expected to touch 44 degrees on Friday and 45 degrees on Saturday.

As per the IMD forecast, heat wave conditions will affect West Rajasthan from May 15 to May 18, while the heat wave will continue in West Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and South Haryana from today till Saturday. A heat wave warning has also been issued for north-west Madhya Pradesh and Bihar between Friday and Saturday. The Meteorological Agency has predicted that hot and humid weather will persist in some parts of Rajasthan for the next five days.

Meanwhile, according to the IMD, the Southwest Monsoon will reach Kerala by May 31, with moderate to heavy rainfall forecast in some parts of the state. “The Southwest Monsoon usually enters Kerala on June 1 with a standard deviation of about seven days. This year, the Southwest Monsoon is likely to establish over Kerala on May 31,” the IMD said in a release.
