A tech leader learned from Steve Jobs advises ‘Freshers should do internships with the right people, even if they have to pay millions’.

After the debate on the issue of 70 hours work week and 70 hours rest week, now a new and revolutionary suggestion has come up for the youth of the corporate world. “College graduates should get internships with the right people,” says Chet Kapoor, Kolkata-born CEO of generative AI company Datastax. Tech leader Kapoor advises freshers to intern with the right people, even if they get Rs. 40 lakhs ($50,000) to be paid.

‘Freshers will benefit more from this initial investment’

Chet Kapoor once interacted with Apple’s former CEO Steve Jobs on the Internet. He enumerated its many advantages. Kapoor made his mark in Silicon Valley as the CEO of cloud software company Apigee, which was acquired by Google in 2016. He has also held top positions at companies including Google and IBM. Emphasizing his advice, he said, ‘Freshers will benefit more from this initial investment. His interesting and somewhat expensive advice has created a stir among young graduates ready to enter the corporate world.

‘Don’t worry about degrees, learn from better people’

Kapoor continued, ‘I tell this to everyone coming from college. Find a group of people who you think you can learn from. Don’t worry about the degree. Don’t even worry about what company they work for. Convince them they need you and then pay them $50,000 a year to work with them. This will be the best $50,000 you’ll ever spend. Rest assured that this will be a better experience than any college education you have ever had.

‘The first few years of a career decide the future’

Chet Kapoor said, ‘The first few years of a career decide the future.’ He said, ‘People get attached to the brand they work for. ‘Oh I worked at Google’ or ‘I worked at AWS.’ The point is, who did you work with and what did you learn from them? Because actually it will lead you on the right path.

‘Working as Steve Jobs’ intern led to success’

Earlier, Kapoor also shared his experience of interning with Steve Jobs. He said, ‘Steve Jobs was a great guy, but I didn’t know him then.’ Kapoor said he attributes his success to his experience working as Steve Jobs’ intern. He made it clear that, more than anything else, he would focus on the questions a tech mogul would ask in all meetings, as that would inform his thought process. He said, ‘That performance was absolutely unprecedented.’
