Afghanistan cricket team has created the biggest upset in the Super-8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating Australia on Sunday. Under the leadership of Rashid Khan, the Afghanistan team defeated Australia by 21 runs. In recent times, Afghanistan cricket team has defeated many big teams with their performance at the international level. During last year’s ODI World Cup, the team defeated England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and in the ongoing tournament they have beaten New Zealand followed by Australia. The brilliance of the Afghanistan cricket team at the international level goes to head coach Jonathan Trott and former West Indies all-rounder and Afghanistan bowling coach Dwayne Bravo.
Former England cricketer Jonathan Trott took over as head coach in July 2022. His tenure was for 18 months and ended in 2023. But the team performed so well under his watch that the Afghanistan Cricket Board extended the contract of head coach Jonathan Trott for a year. Under his guidance, Afghanistan achieved considerable success and won many victories. While former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo was made the bowling consultant of the Afghanistan team by the Afghanistan Cricket Board before the start of the T20 World Cup.
This win is historic for Afghanistan in many ways. Afghanistan beat Australia for the first time in the history of T20 World Cup, while this is Australia’s first defeat against Afghanistan in 6 international matches. Cricket Australia had refused to play a bilateral series against Afghanistan a few months ago, as the women’s cricket team did not have the right to play in Afghanistan. It was the third time Cricket Australia has refused to play Afghanistan since the Taliban took over the Asian nation in September 2021. The Taliban banned women’s participation in sports, which the CA condemned.
