Read on the application

After the end of the T0 World Cup being played in America and West Indies, there is a big change in the Indian coaching staff. As Indian team head coach Rahul Dravid’s tenure ends after T20 World Cup 2024, BCCI is looking for a new coach and Gautam Gambhir is the frontrunner for the post and according to media reports in the last week of June. A new coaching staff may be announced. South African legend Jonty Rhodes may become India’s fielding coach.

Jonty Rhodes has yet to receive a formal offer, but according to a report from RevSports, he is one of the legends being considered. A head coach usually has the freedom to choose his coaching staff, including batting, bowling and fielding coaches. As such, Jonty has worked with Gambhir in the coaching staff of Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, resulting in a good rapport between the two.

Rhodes was considered among the best fielders of his generation. He was a part of the Mumbai Indians camp for nine years, after which he became the fielding coach of Lucknow Super Giants. He applied for the role of India’s fielding coach, but did not get the chance in 2019. Currently Paras Mhambare and T Dilip are the bowling and fielding coaches respectively.

The 54-year-old Rhodes said in 2019, “Yes, I have applied for the post of India’s new fielding coach. My wife and I love the country and it has given us so much… We have two children born in India.” Meanwhile, it will also be interesting to see if current fielding coach T Dileep puts his name forward once again. India’s fielding has improved over the last few years, reflecting the excellent work done by Dileep, but the final decision will be taken by the BCCI, who will certainly consult Gambhir as well.
