During the day’s trade yesterday, BSE’s 30-share index Sensex rose 538.89 points, or 0.70 percent, to touch an all-time high of 77,145.46 points. Later it closed up 204.33 points or 0.27 percent at a new record level of 76,810.90 points.

Why did it accelerate?

Domestic stock markets were bullish on Thursday as softening retail inflation raised expectations of a policy interest rate cut and both the benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty closed at fresh record highs. Traders said heavy buying in capital products, consumer durables and industrial stocks also helped propel the indices.

According to government data released on Wednesday, consumer price index-based retail inflation fell to 4.75 percent in May, a one-year low. Retail inflation remained below the Reserve Bank of India’s satisfactory range of four per cent (above or below two per cent) due to a modest fall in food prices.
