After T20 World Cup, Indian team to tour Zimbabwe with legend, not Gautam Gambhir – Report

VVS Laxman and his support staff at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) are likely to travel with the Indian team for the five-match T20 international series against Zimbabwe starting July 6, while Gautam Gambhir will end his stint as coach on the Sri Lanka tour. Expected to start from The squad for the Zimbabwe series will be announced later this week which could take place on June 22 or 23. Young players who have performed well in the IPL and are on the ‘target’ list of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are currently attending camps at the NCA under Laxman’s supervision.

Gambhir is currently a strong contender to become the head coach of the senior men’s team, beating former women’s head coach WV Raman. This announcement will be just a formality and may be announced in the next few days. Gambhir will also get to choose his support staff, including batting, bowling and fielding coaches. It is understood that Gambhir could begin his stint from mid-July when the Indian team travels to Sri Lanka for a white-ball series that will see them play three T20 Internationals and as many ODIs.

A Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source said on condition of anonymity, “There is a possibility that Laxman may tour Zimbabwe along with some NCA coaches with a team full of young faces. It is also decided that not only the youth team will be sent to Zimbabwe but six to seven members of the T20 World Cup squad will be included. Hardik Pandya is likely to captain the team, if he does not seek rest then Suryakumar Yadav, who led them in the home match against Australia and the series against South Africa, may be given the responsibility.

Team India Schedule for Zimbabwe Tour

The Indian team will start the tour from July 6. After this, the second match of the series will be played on 7th July. The third match of the series will be played on July 10, while the fourth match will be played on July 13 and the fifth and final match of the series will be played on July 14.
