Former Team India cricketer and part of franchise team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) Robin Uthappa has praised current KKR captain Shreyas Iyer. In the final of IPL 2024, KKR beat Sunrisers Hyderabad in a one-sided match. After this title win for KKR, Robin Uthappa feels that Shreyas Iyer is far ahead in the race to become the future captain of Team India. Uthappa said that under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir, Iyer is learning the responsibilities of captaincy well. He looks very comfortable setting the field on the ground, changing the bowlers and doesn’t seem too worried in any situation. This was Iyer’s second season as KKR captain. In the 2022 season, under Iyer’s captaincy, the KKR team finished seventh. Due to injury, Iyer could not play in IPL 2023.

Robin Uthappa said on Jio Cinemas, ‘I am here to say this. He will lead the Indian team in the future. I think he is the front runner in this race, maybe even ahead of Shubman Gill. His character is such that he knows how to handle a team. I think he has learned a lot this season. You have to understand that he is working with people like Gautam Gambhir, Chandrakant Pandit, Abhishek Nair.

Iyer had a tough time before the IPL. His name was not on the BCCI’s contract list due to a back injury, Iyer missed the Test series against England and the semi-final of the Ranji Trophy. But all these things have not affected his performance in IPL 2024. Uthappa also praised Iyer for not making a fuss over it all.
