Al Jazeera to stop broadcasting in Israel, Netanyahu cabinet calls it a threat to national security

New Delhi:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet on Sunday decided to suspend Al Jazeera’s operations in Israel as long as the war in Gaza continues. Israel has said that Al Jazeera’s broadcasts are a threat to national security. According to news agency Reuters news, following the cabinet decision, Netanyahu posted on social media that the inflammatory channel Al Jazeera will be closed in Israel. A government statement said Israel’s communications minister had signed an order to take “immediate action”. However, Al Jazeera may approach the court to stop it.

The Al Jazeera network is funded by the Qatari government and has been sharply critical of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, from where it has reported around the clock throughout the war. Al Jazeera’s Gaza operation was not mentioned in the Israeli statement.

Israel’s parliament approved a law last month that allows foreign broadcasters to temporarily shut down in Israel. The law allows Netanyahu and his cabinet to close the network’s offices in Israel for 45 days, a period that can be extended. Therefore, it may remain in force until the end of July or until the ongoing military operation in Gaza.

Al Jazeera had no immediate comment on Sunday, although it had previously denied allegations that it was a threat to Israel’s security and said the shutdown was an attempt to silence it.
