New Delhi: Dum maro dum… we all must have heard it at some point or another. But this song is now fitting for the people of America. In fact, instead of beer, Americans are now drinking pipes. A study found that the number of Americans who use marijuana daily or almost daily now outnumber those who drink alcohol.
The research, published in the journal Addiction, is based on data collected by national surveys on drug use and health over four decades, the BBC reports. A 2022 survey reported an estimated 17.7 million daily marijuana users. That’s more than the estimated 14.7 million daily drinkers for the first time.
Americans are doing their best
However, alcohol is still the more widely used substance of the two. But the study found that between 1992 and 2022, the per capita rate of daily or near-daily marijuana use increased 15-fold. In 1992, fewer than a million people said they used marijuana almost daily. This is the lowest use recorded since the study began in 1979.
Why are people struggling?
Chief Medical Officer of EO Care, a company that produces medicinal marijuana, Dr. Brooke Vorster told the BBC that its use is increasing for a number of reasons. Because it has been legalized here in many states. Due to which people are openly saying that they smoke ganja or have used it at times. He further said that the rate change is not as dramatic as the survey suggests. People are not afraid to admit that they are using.
