“At least don’t wage war in Ramadan”: PM Modi says as he sends special envoy to Israel

In an interview to Republic TV, PM Modi said that Israel should not wage war at least during the holy month of Ramadan.

PM Modi said, “When Israel and Hamas were at war, I sent my special envoy to Israel to explain that Ramadan is going on. At least don’t fight in Ramadan, don’t attack anyone.”

He said, “Secondly, I said that whatever people want in the month of Ramzan, India wants to send them, there should be no hurdle. So this is our character and when we do it, we should not “boast. Sometimes we succeed, sometimes we don’t, but we do it.”

Netanyahu is adamant on the release of the hostages

In early March, responding to international pressure for a ceasefire, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the idea of a ceasefire during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. He said he would “like to see the release of another hostage, but not one. Without release, no negotiations will succeed, no end to the fighting.”

A delegation of Hamas ended the talks in Cairo on March 7 with no apparent breakthrough. Israel has warned that if the hostages in Gaza are not released before Ramadan, it will launch a military assault on Rafah, where more than one million displaced people have taken refuge.

India is on the side of peace

Regarding the Israel-Hamas war, PM Modi said that while the world is choosing sides, we take a clear stand, India stands for peace.

He said, “There are all groups, communities in the world. Almost all communities want India’s presence in some form or the other. So, India is in a good position. As far as conflict is concerned, the world is considering this position.”

PM Modi asserted that, “We are the ones whose stand is clear, we are not on anyone’s side. We are on the side of peace.” “And because of that the world has come to trust us that we are the people who are not talking about arming anyone and not talking about fighting anyone,” he said.

“We are not ready to give up the country’s values.”

PM Modi also shared an example regarding the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He said he met Russian President Vladimir Putin. “I had the courage to sit down with President Putin and tell him that this is not the time for war. And we are for peace,” he said.

The Prime Minister said, “We are not ready to give up the country’s values. We are going to the world with our country, our values and our traditions.”
