Canada has designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization

Canada has designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a branch of the Iranian armed forces, as a “terrorist entity”. Canada’s Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc announced Wednesday afternoon that Canada will use all tools at its disposal “to counter the terrorist activity” of the IRGC.

Thousands of senior Iranian government officials, including top IRGC members, are now banned from entering Canada, LeBlanc said, adding that those already in the country could be investigated and deported.

As a result of the announcement, Canadian financial institutions, such as banks and brokerages, will be required to immediately freeze the assets of a “terrorist organization,” Xinhua news agency said, citing a press statement from Public Security Canada. It is a criminal offense for any person in Canada or Canadians abroad to knowingly possess property owned or controlled by a terrorist group.

According to local media, charities may lose their status if they maintain ties with terrorist groups. People belonging to those groups may be denied entry to Canada. The US declared the IRGC a “terrorist group” in 2019.
