Canadian PM Justin Trudeau changes tone from PM Modi’s third term, expresses willingness to talk on serious issues

Toronto:

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau’s tone has changed after Narendra Modi became Prime Minister for the third time. Justin Trudeau expressed hope that India and Canada could resume dialogue on critical issues related to national security, the interests of Canadians and the rule of law after India assumes power for the third time. Let us tell you that relations between India and Canada have become tense since last year over the Khalistan issue.

Justin Trudeau said this in an interview with CBC News. “There is commonality on many big issues. We need to work together as a global community on this,” he said. “But now that he (PM Modi) is past the electoral stage, I think we should talk about our issues,” Trudeau said.

Last year, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau in Parliament expressed suspicion that Indian agencies were behind the killing of Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India completely rejected these allegations. India also asked the Canadian diplomat present in New Delhi to leave the country within five days. India expressed concern over Canada becoming a hub for Khalistan supporters. However, Canada rejected it.

Trudeau’s statement came at a time when he met PM Narendra Modi during the G-7 summit in Italy from June 13 to 15. Modi also shared a photo with Trudeau on the X handle. Where PM Modi wrote a detailed caption on his meeting with German Chancellor Olf Scholz, Japanese PM Fumio Kishida and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. At the same time, a photo with Trudeau was only captioned in one line.

“Thank you Canadian PM for the congratulatory message. India is keen to work with Canada based on mutual understanding and respect for each other’s concerns,” PM Modi wrote in a reply to Trudeau.
