The Central Board of Secondary Education has denied the viral news which was claiming that CBSE may not conduct 10th and 12th board exams twice in a year. In the viral news, quoting sources, it was said that the board will not be able to hold the board exams twice a year under the current academic schedule. Its schools are spread all over the world and hence it is not possible to take the board exam in two shifts in the current system. The CBSE board termed the news as completely baseless. On the news that went viral, the board said it was completely false and had no basis in any dialogue between the ministry and CBSE.

It may be mentioned that the NCF brought in August to implement the National Education Policy 2020 had recommended that students should be allowed to take the board exams twice in an academic year, in which only the best marks would be kept. The Union Education Ministry has asked the CBSE to prepare to hold the board exams twice a year from the academic session 2025-26. The ministry’s initial plan was to introduce the board exams twice a year from the 2024-25 academic session. However, it was extended by one year.

In February, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the scheme is likely to be implemented from the 2025-26 academic year on an optional basis. Earlier, Dharmendra Pradhan had told ‘PTI-Bhasha’ in an interview in October 2023 that it will not be mandatory for students to take the board exams twice a year. He said, “Students will have an option to appear for engineering entrance exams like JEE (board exams of class 10 and 12) twice a year. They can choose the best score…but it will be completely optional, no compulsion.

In fact, the option of taking the exam twice is being introduced to reduce the stress among the students who are afraid of getting only one chance. If a student is not satisfied with the first time exam score, he/she can re-sit the exam next time. Only the best scores of the students appearing in both the board exams of the year will be taken. The merit of the result will be based on the best score.
