Centre’s entry in Bihar’s caste-based enumeration case, seeks time from SC to file affidavit

During the hearing on Bihar’s caste enumeration in the Supreme Court, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said on behalf of the Center that he wanted to file some submissions. The Supreme Court gave him a week’s time on that. The hearing was small, but had a huge impact in Bihar. The Janata Dal United objected to the Solicitor General’s intervention.

Lalan Singh accused the BJP and the Modi government
JDU National President Lalan Singh has made serious allegations against BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Lalan Singh said, “The central government is against caste enumeration. Till now BJP was playing behind the scenes. Now it has come in front of the scenes and opposed it.” Lalan Singh said, “At Monday’s hearing of the Supreme Court, the Solicitor General of the country came and said that he also wants to say something about this. The Supreme Court has accepted the appeal of the Solicitor General. A week’s time has been given.”

Court’s refusal to ban survey
At the same time, during the hearing, the Supreme Court again rejected the appeal to ban the survey. The Supreme Court reiterated that it would impose a ban only if there was a prima facie case. The Supreme Court had clearly said that the ban cannot be imposed without hearing the side of the Bihar government.

Personal data cannot be made public- SC
In a previous hearing, the Supreme Court had said that personal data cannot be made public, as it would be a violation of privacy, according to a Supreme Court decision related to the right to privacy. The Supreme Court said that there are two parts to it, the first is the data collection which is done – the second is the analysis which is a bit of a difficult task.

The Patna High Court dismissed the petitions on August 1
Earlier on August 1, the Patna High Court had dismissed all the petitions challenging the caste enumeration. The High Court in its order said that the government can do the calculation if it wants. Soon after this, the Nitish government issued an order regarding caste enumeration.

500 crore allocation for caste based census
500 crores have been allocated by the government for caste based census and economic survey. It has been argued that according to caste enumeration, the Nitish Kumar government only wants to take information related to people’s economic status and their caste. This allows plans to be made for their improvement.
