The Board of Control for Cricket in India has announced the 15-member squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup. India have kept seven batsmen, four bowlers and four all-rounders in the squad for the ODI World Cup. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee on Tuesday (September 5) picked India’s squad for the ODI World Cup 2023, with Yuzvendra Chahal and Sanju Samson absent. Many cricket experts and former cricketers have given their reactions after the announcement of the team. Veterans like Ravi Shastri and Sunil Gavaskar seemed satisfied with the selection of players in the squad. But some veterans have questioned the choice. Krishnamachari Srikanth questioned Shardul Thakur’s place and for this he started questioning former coach Sanjay Bangar in the live show.
Former Indian captain Krishnamachari Srikanth was India’s chief selector during the 2011 ODI World Cup. India have left out spinners like Yuzvendra Chahal and Ashwin, while bringing in Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, whose game is almost identical. According to Srikanth, Shardul would have barely bowled 10 overs in ODIs and not even scored consistent runs, but he was picked in the squad. According to him, Arshdeep could have been a good choice.
After the announcement of the Indian team, Krishnamachari Srikanth said in a show on Star Sports in the presence of Sanjay Bangar and Piyush Chawla, “Everyone is saying that we need a batsman at No. 8. Who needs to bat at number 8? Shardul Thakur is batting at number 10. Not even bowled 10 overs. How many overs did he bowl in the match against Nepal? Just look at their performances against teams like 4, West Indies and Zimbabwe. Good performances, keep them in mind, don’t give importance to them. That’s why I say don’t be fooled by the overall average, it doesn’t reflect the true picture. Always watch individual matches.
There was also a discussion between Krishnamachari Srikanth and former coach Sanjay Bangar regarding Shardul Thakur. During the show Srikanth asked if Shardul Thakur is a batsman? Bangar said yes to Test cricket. On that Srikanth asked again that I am talking about ODI cricket, is he an all-rounder? Bangar said yes it is. Srikanth asked how he is an all-rounder. His highest score after the T20 World Cup is 25. Bangar said that his bowling is good. How good is Srikanth’s bowling, how many times has he completed the quota of 10 overs in his career?
