Covishield vaccine poses a risk of blood clots, can it increase the chance of a heart attack? Know- What is TTS

New Delhi:

British pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca has admitted that its Covid-19 vaccine may cause a rare side effect called CoviShield Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS). The vaccine manufacturer said in court documents that CoviShield, in rare cases, can cause a condition that can lead to blood clots and low platelet counts. It increases the risk of heart attack. The admission comes after a lawsuit was filed against the company, alleging serious harm and death related to the vaccine.

Covishield, developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University and manufactured by the Serum Institute of India, can lead to this condition in rare cases, according to court documents. The vaccine was administered on a large scale across India during the Kovid-19 pandemic.

What is thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome?

Thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) is a rare condition in which blood clots form in abnormal places in the body and the number of platelets in the blood decreases. Platelets are tiny cells that help blood clot, so having too few of them can be dangerous. This condition was seen in people who were given adenoviral vector COVID-19 vaccines such as Vaxjavaria, CoviShield (AstraZeneca) and Johnson & Johnson/Jensen Covid-19 vaccine. TTS occurs because the body’s immune system responds to the vaccine by making antibodies that attack proteins involved in blood clotting.

TTS is classified into 2 levels…

Level 1

  • Rarely, blood clots, such as in the brain or intestines, sometimes abnormally form in the legs or lungs.
  • A low platelet count (below 150,000 per microliter).
  • A positive anti-PF4 ELISA test helps to confirm this, but is not always necessary.
  • Tier 1 cases are usually more severe and dangerous.
  • This is more common in young people.

Tier-2

  • Common blood clots, such as in the legs or lungs.
  • A low platelet count (below 150,000 per microliter).
  • A positive anti-PF4 ELISA test is required to confirm this.

Symptoms of TTS

Symptoms of TTS can include severe headache, stomach pain, leg swelling, trouble breathing and thinking, or seizures. If someone experiences these symptoms after receiving the vaccine, they should contact a doctor immediately.

During the Corona pandemic, CoviShield, developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University, was manufactured by the Serum Institute of India and was widely administered to the people of the country. AstraZeneca is facing several claims in Britain that its vaccine has caused several deaths and serious injuries. In 51 cases in the UK High Court, victims have sought damages of up to 100 million pounds. Jamie Scott, the first prosecutor in the case, alleged that a vaccine he was given in April 2021 caused permanent brain damage from a blood clot. He claimed that it became difficult for him to work… The hospital told his wife three times that he was going to die.

“It is believed that the AZ vaccine, in very rare cases, can cause TTS. Additionally, TTS can occur in the absence of the AZ vaccine (or any vaccine),” AstraZeneca said. AstraZeneca agreed to a legal defense of Scott’s claim, which could lead to payments to victims and bereaved relatives.
