The Pakistan cricket team has been in turmoil since reaching the final of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. The Pakistan team failed to make it to the semi-finals during last year’s ODI World Cup and this time the team has been eliminated from the group stage of the T20 World Cup 2024. In the ongoing tournament, the players have disappointed in all three departments. The Pakistan team under the leadership of Babar Azam lost the match against India as well as America. Babar Azam is being blamed for the team’s poor performance in the T20 World Cup and there are talks of removing him from the captaincy. Meanwhile, the former cricketer of the team Younis Khan has advised Fakhar Zaman to choose the new captain of the team.

This performance of the team has once again raised questions on Babar Azam’s captaincy. Former Pakistani cricketer Younis Khan suggested on a PTV Sports game show that Fakhar Zaman could become the captain of the team. Younis asked, “Why can’t Fakhar Zaman be the captain of the team, isn’t he a performer?” Didn’t he do well in the last 50 over World Cup? Who is the player who gave us hope? Zaman had a poor start to the 2023 World Cup in India, but returned to form in the second half.

Fakhar Zaman’s performance as an opener has been good. However, he has been sent down the batting order in the T20 format. He batted at number four in T20 World Cup 2024. Younis continued, “Who is the player in the team who is leaving his opening slot and batting at number four, five or six? Who is leaving their place? Fakhr Zaman! Why don’t you make him captain?

However, falling down the batting order did not bode well for Fakhar Zaman. He has scored only 33 runs in four matches. Besides Zaman, Younis also recommended Naseem Shah as captain and compared him to South Africa’s Graeme Smith, who took over the captaincy at a young age and had a great career as both a leader and a player.
