Kane Williamson stepped down as captain of the New Zealand limited-overs cricket team in June and declined a national contract for 2024-25. He made the announcement days after New Zealand’s surprise exit from the group stage of the T20 World Cup in America and West Indies. Kane shared a post on social media on Friday about his retirement. In which he was seen passionate about his captaincy journey. India’s star batsman Shubman Gill has also reacted to his post.
Sharing the post, Kane Williamson wrote, “It’s been an honor and a privilege to captain this team. After 8 years it’s time to hand it over. There have been many ups and downs but it’s all part of an amazing journey, with so many people I’m excited about what’s next for this team and the cricket we’re going to play.” Shubman Gill also reacted to Williamson’s post. “Ken Mama,” he wrote.
According to New Zealand rules, players with a central contract are required to play in the Super Smash if they are not playing international cricket. Under Williamson, New Zealand reached the World Cup final three times, including the ODI World Cup in 2015 and 2019 and the T20 World Cup in 2021. Also won the first World Test Championship title. Williamson captained the team in three of these four tournaments. Williamson has played 100 Tests, 165 ODIs and 93 T20Is for New Zealand.
New Zealand’s campaign ended with a comfortable seven-wicket win over Papua New Guinea. They failed to make it to the semi-finals for the first time in 10 years. Trent Boult, the leader of the fast bowling attack, has already confirmed that the ongoing T20 World Cup will be his last.
“I want to play as long as I can,” Kane Williamson told the media after returning home after being knocked out in the group stage of the T20 World Cup. There are many great tournaments during that time but SA20 looks interesting. For this I have to reject the Central Agreement.
