Foxconn focus on semiconductor factory in India, breaks with Vedanta, now joins hands with this company

Foxconn-STMicro: Foxconn Technology is tying up with STMicroelectronics NV to build a semiconductor factory in India. Taiwan’s Foxconn and French-Italian STMicroelectronics are planning to apply for 40-nanometer chip plants. Such mature chips are used in cars, cameras, printers and many other machines.

The government has sought details of: A Bloomberg report cites sources as saying that the Indian government has sought more details from Foxconn about its partnership with STMicro. Foxconn is also in talks with several other companies that have chip-making technology, one of the sources said. The IT Ministry of India has not given any reaction on this. Meanwhile, spokespeople for Foxconn and STMicro declined to comment.

Let us tell you that recently Foxconn’s partnership with billionaire Anil Agarwal’s Vedanta Resources Limited has broken. A key reason for the breakup of this partnership was that neither Foxconn nor Vedanta had any significant experience in chip manufacturing. At the same time, this partnership also broke down due to delays in subsidy processing etc. by the government.

India’s Focus on Manufacturing: Besides expensive imports, India is trying to increase chip production to reduce dependence on Taiwan and China. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also pledged $10 billion to attract chip makers. In this series, American memory chip firm Micron Technology Inc has announced a $2.75 billion assembly and test facility in Gujarat. Other chip-related companies coming to India include Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and equipment maker Applied Materials Inc.
