New Delhi. Carlos Alcaraz has become the new champion of the French Open. Spain’s Alcaraz defeated Alexander Zverev in a thrilling match to capture the French Open men’s singles title. This is Carlos Alcaraz’s third Grand Slam title. Before this Alcaraj has already won US Open in 2022 and Wimbledon title in 2023. Winning the French Open earned Carlos a prize money of $26,08,465 (roughly Rs. 21.78 crores). This is more than the prize money received by the champions of the T20 World Cup being played in West Indies and America. The T20 World Champion will get a prize money of around Rs 20.36 crore.
Third seed Carlos Alcaraz defeated Alexander Zverev 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 in a five-set match. Fourth-ranked German Zverev battled hard for four hours and 19 minutes, but was unable to win the title. This is Alcaraz’s fifth win in 10 matches against Zverev.
Rafael Nadal’s record was broken
Alcaraz, 21, grew up watching his country’s legend Rafael Nadal win 14 trophies at Roland Garros. He has now overtaken Nadal to become the youngest player to win major championships on three surfaces. Nadal was almost a year and a half older than Alcaraz when he achieved this feat.
Not Nadal-Djokovic-Federer for the first time in 20 years
This is the first French Open final since 2004 in which neither Nadal, Novak Djokovic nor Roger Federer played. Nadal lost to Zverev in the first round two weeks ago. Three-time champion Djokovic withdrew before the quarter-final match due to a knee injury. Roger Federer has retired.
Played in 3 Grand Slam finals and won all three
Alcaraz has won all three of his matches in Grand Slam finals so far. However, he and Zverev were playing in the French Open final for the first time. This is Zverev’s second loss in two Grand Slam title matches. The 27-year-old Zverev lost in the 2020 US Open final after losing a two-set lead to Dominic Thiem.
