Hardeep Nijjar murder accused came to Canada on study visa: Report

According to a translation of his statement in Punjabi, he said he got his study visa a few days later, according to Global News. The Ethicworks Facebook page shared a promotional video and photograph of Barab, who was claimed to be from Kotakpura town in Bathinda.

According to Global News, the caption of the video reads, “Congratulations to Karan Brar on getting Canada Study Visa. Another happy client from Kotakpura.” Immigration Minister Mark Miller has declined to answer questions about how the suspects came to Canada, but online posts show Brar arrived on a student permit three years before the murder.

According to Brar’s Facebook page, after starting studies at Bow Valley College in Calgary on April 30, 2020, he moved to Edmonton on May 4, 2020. However, no response has yet been received from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada to questions regarding this topic.

Brar, 22, Karanpreet Singh, 28, and Kamalpreet Singh, 22, were taken into custody in Edmonton on Friday. He is charged with murder and conspiracy. He appeared in court in Surrey, British Columbia on Tuesday. Members of British Columbia’s Sikh community thronged a Surrey court on Tuesday as three Indian nationals accused of murdering Hardeep Singh Nijjar appeared in court for the first time via video, Canada-based news website Globe and Mail reported.

As the trio appeared in court wearing orange jumpsuits, pro-Khalistan protesters chanted slogans outside the Surrey provincial court, blaming the Indian government for the killing. All three men were detained in Edmonton on Friday last week and charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the June 2023 Nizar shooting, which has severely damaged Canada’s relations with India.

It may be noted that relations between India and Canada have become strained after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian government agents of killing Niger. However, India has dismissed these allegations as nonsense. Hardeep Singh Nijjar was designated a terrorist by India’s National Investigation Agency in 2020 and was shot dead as he came out of a gurudwara in Surrey in June last year. Reportedly, a video surfaced in March this year in which Niger can be clearly seen being shot by armed men. This has been described as “contract murder”.
