Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Chaudhary in an exclusive interview with NDTV opened up about the low voter turnout in the Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav. He also clarified his opinion on the issue of giving reservation to Muslims. Expressing his concern over declining voter participation in western Uttar Pradesh, Jayant Chaudhary said the Election Commission of India (ECI) needs to find innovative strategies to engage the youth and urban voters. “It’s not just about voting; it’s about fostering an environment where every citizen feels encouraged to exercise their democratic rights,” he said.

Despite the low turnout, Jayant Chaudhary pointed to the unwavering commitment of his voters and said the election race in western UP was far from a close contest. Acknowledging the challenge for both the ruling NDA and the opposition to strengthen their respective voter bases, Jayant Chaudhary highlighted the impact of competitive races in boosting voter enthusiasm. He emphasized the importance of vibrant electoral contests to encourage public participation and said, “People come to the polls not just to vote, but to see the contest.”

On Haryana, Jayant Chaudhary said the perception of Jat discontent was exaggerated. Haryana may not be as big a challenge for the BJP as it is believed to be. Acknowledging the scattered efforts of the opposition, he argued that the electorate primarily wanted stability and effective governance. Reaffirming RLD’s unwavering commitment to redress farmers’ problems, he said, “The government is working proactively and positively in redressal of farmers’ grievances.”

Jayant Chaudhary downplayed the importance of Rahul Gandhi’s presence in Uttar Pradesh politics. He commented, “Given the Gandhi family’s historic ties to Rae Bareli, Rahul Gandhi’s candidature was expected.” He indicated that the key issue in the election remains the issue of strong leadership and governance. While Jayant Chaudhary questioned Akhilesh Yadav’s leadership style saying that people have become disillusioned with him. Pointing to the emerging dynamics in regional politics, he said, “The voter response reflects a broad sentiment towards effective leadership.”

Muslim quota unconstitutional
Joining the controversial debate on Muslim quota, Jayant Chaudhary asserted that such measures are unconstitutional and a threat to the nation’s secular constitution. Describing Rahul Gandhi’s statements as an indication of the Congress party’s intentions, he stressed the need for a transparent debate on issues of social justice and equality.
