Rae Bareli… Impregnable fortress of Congress…!

This time Rahul Gandhi is contesting from Wayanad Lok Sabha seat and Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat in Kerala. Rae Bareli has been the stronghold of the Nehru-Gandhi family. Every political discussion in this much-discussed Lok Sabha constituency is incomplete without mention of Gandhi’s name. The dominance of the Congress can be gauged from the fact that it has lost Rae Bareli only three times since independence – in 1977, 1996 and 1998. Sonia Gandhi represented the constituency for four consecutive terms since 2004 and has now handed over the reins to her son Rahul Gandhi. Here BJP has fielded Dinesh Pratap Singh against Rahul Gandhi.

Priyanka Gandhi actually campaigned vigorously in both Rae Bareli and nearby Amethi. In Amethi, Kishorelal Sharma, an associate of the Gandhi family, is contesting against senior BJP minister Smriti Irani. Ram temple, Modi’s name, government’s free ration scheme, permanent houses for the poor, stray animals and Congress’ allegations of changing the constitution if BJP comes to power are the topics of discussion in the election, but all these are seen to be dominated by the Gandhi family. is
