Former India openers Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman were interviewed for the post of national team head coach by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday. The interview was conducted on ‘Zoom Call’ with Gambhir, Raman and CAC chief Ashok Malhotra joining online. Reports were saying that Gambhir was the only candidate but there was a surprising twist when Raman was interviewed.

“Yes, Gambhir appeared for the interview with the CAC,” a BCCI source told PTI. A round of discussion was held today. Another round is expected tomorrow.” He said, “Raman was interviewed after Gambhir. This also happened in June. He also prepared his own roadmap for Indian cricket. The interview lasted for 40 minutes. The committee asked some questions and then watched the presentation, however, it is believed that Gambhir is the only candidate and the announcement of his name is just a formality which could take place in the next 48 hours.

Gambhir’s conversations with CAC chairman Malhotra and his colleagues Jatin Paranjpe and Sulakshana Naik were not immediately available. Both Paranjape and Sulakshana live in Mumbai. The discussion is believed to have focused on Gambhir’s strategy for the next three years during which there are three ICC tournaments in different formats. There is an apex council meeting on Tuesday evening and it is believed that secretary Jai Shah will brief the members about the coach selection process before the final announcement.

CAC is also interviewing some interested candidates for the post of selector from North Zone. Former India opener Gambhir, 42, recently guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL trophy as the team’s mentor. Current Indian coach Rahul Dravid will step down after the team’s campaign in the ongoing T20 World Cup in America and West Indies ends. After going undefeated in the group league stage, the team is currently in Barbados for the Super Eight matches. He is scheduled to play against Afghanistan on Thursday.
