Ricky Ponting has praised Rohit Sharma’s captaincy after the India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup 2024 match. India defeated Pakistan by 6 runs in a low scoring match. India defended 119 runs in New York ground. Despite Pakistan having the upper hand, Rohit did not cower under pressure. He used the bowlers properly, due to which the Indian team managed to script the win. At one point Pakistan’s score was 72/2 in 12 overs. Pakistan scored 113 runs for 7 wickets in 20 overs. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah took three wickets for just 14 runs in a spell of four overs. He was voted player of the match.

Former Australian captain Ponting said in a video shared by ICC that, Rohit Sharma is a very experienced captain. And when I met him after the match, I said, ‘Dude, your captaincy was great today.’ I don’t think he could have done more. You should notice the many bowlers present in their team. They have such bowlers not only for India but also in IPL. So, Rohit understands it well. Does he know which bowler to use when? But it is one thing for the skipper to plan as the bowlers have to step up and execute it. Hardik performed brilliantly.”

Ponting said, “I thought he (Pandya) did a good job with the ball as well, and again it’s a wicket that the fast bowlers like. Let me tell you, all-rounder Hardik gave 24 runs in four overs.” And took 2 wickets. 7 runs came out of his bat. While all-rounder Akshar Patel impressed with both bat and ball. Apart from scoring 20 runs, Akshar conceded 11 runs in two overs and took one wicket. He dismissed Usman Khan LBW. Ponting also praised Akshar’s economical bowling. “But their spinners also bowled four overs for 20 runs and (Akshar) Patel took a big wicket. Yes, the wicket was definitely different in the second innings.
