Debutant fast bowler Arundhati Reddy said Pooja Vastrakar had planned to bowl a slower ball in the final over in the second ODI against South Africa on Wednesday, which India won by four runs. Vastrakar took the important wicket of Nadine de Klerk and defended 11 runs in the final over. India’s score on the Bengaluru ground was 325/3. India have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

In the press conference after the match, Arundhati said, “The discussion and planning that took place in this last over. I think Pooja got the message to bowl slower after bowling the first three balls. She stuck to it and that’s how she got the wicket.” Arundhati himself bowled the 19th over brilliantly and conceded just 12 runs despite a six by de Klerk. Arundhati said she was mentally prepared for this over.

“I was up for it in the last over and I like to bowl difficult overs,” she said. When I came down here I thought let’s try and bat deep. Our goal was to build a partnership and see it through to the end.”

India built a huge score in the second match on the back of centuries from Smriti Mandhana (136) and captain Harmanpreet Kaur (103 not out). Both shared a 171-run partnership for the third wicket. Chasing a target of 326 runs, captain Laura Walvert (135 not out) and Kapp (114) scored centuries for South Africa. The duo put on 184 runs for the fourth wicket but the South African team could only manage 321 runs for 6 wickets in 50 overs.
