As the England squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 was announced, the England and Wales Cricket Board i.e. ECB announced that the players who have been selected in the squad will not be available for the IPL 2024 playoff matches. The board has made it clear that he should be on national duty for the T20 series against Pakistan starting on May 22. England team managing director Rob Key has said that captain Jos Buttler wants the players to withdraw their names from the IPL 2024 playoffs. Sunil Gavaskar is upset with this decision. He has said that the BCCI should act on this or take a pay cut.

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar is upset with the ECB’s decision and has called on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take strict action against foreign players who skip the tournament for their national duty. The BCCI started talks with the ECB as soon as England talked about recalling the players. However, no definitive answer has emerged yet. The playoff matches will be played from May 21 and England players including captain Buttler will not participate.

Sunil Gavaskar has said in his column for Mid-Day that the franchise and the BCCI should take strict action against such decisions. He wrote, “I am in favor of the players choosing the country before anything else, but various franchises have been assured of their availability for the entire season, if they withdraw now, it will disappoint the franchises, who might have more money to play an IPL. In such a case, the franchise should not only deduct a large amount from the player’s fee, but pay 10 percent of that fee (the board gets a 20 percent commission).”

He further said, “If the board has gone back on its assurance, they too need to be punished. However, the board gets this 10 per cent commission only in the IPL, not anywhere else. Neither in the Australian Big Bash League, nor The ECB has no use for its generosity in either the Hundred League or any other T20 league in the world. Many reports have said that if a foreign player is bought for Rs 10 crore, 20 per cent of the IPL’s central revenue is Rs 2 crore per year. Goes to the board as commission, however, Gavaskar has mentioned 10 per cent.
