Kenya violence: President Ruto announces tough stance, India issues advisory for its citizens

New Delhi:

Violent protests against the government’s proposed tax hike in the East African country of Kenya show no sign of abating. At least five protesters were shot dead and more than 150 injured in Nairobi. Police fired tear gas and bullets and set fire to part of Kenya’s parliament after thousands of people stormed it. Kenyan President William Ruto said on Tuesday that he would take a tough stance against “violence and lawlessness”. Protests against his government’s proposed tax hike have turned violent. Meanwhile, the Indian government has advised its citizens in Kenya to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary movement.

The Indian Consulate in Kenya issued an advisory on the social media platform “advised to maintain distance from affected areas.”

It also said, “Please follow local news and the mission’s website and social media handles for updates.”

Army deployment in Kenya

The army has been deployed to assist police in Kenya. Tear gas, water cannon and rubber bullets have been used against the demonstrators. Five people were shot dead and 31 injured, NGOs including Amnesty Kenya said in a joint statement.

President Ruto’s tough stance on protesters

“We will respond fully, effectively and swiftly to incidents of treason,” President Ruto told a press conference. Also said the protest was “hijacked by dangerous people”.

“It is neither reasonable nor conceivable that criminals pretending to be peaceful protesters can unleash terror against the people, their elected representatives and institutions established under our constitution and expect to go unpunished,” Ruto said.
