Manipur CM change speculations high, several MLAs arrive in Delhi; CM Biren Singh said- ‘In the meeting with MLAs…’

Imphal:

The north-eastern state of Manipur has seen sporadic incidents of violence since last year’s communal violence. Questions have also been raised against CM N Biren Singh regarding the violence. The opposition has demanded his resignation several times. Speculations are now rife about a possible change in leadership in the violence-hit state. There is talk that some MLAs of the Biren Singh government have gone to New Delhi to demand resignation from the post of CM. However, Singh has denied these speculations. He said that some people are spreading such rumors due to vested interests.

CM Biren Singh on Friday admitted that some MLAs from his party and allied forces have gone to Delhi. He claimed that these MLAs have gone to meet the BJP leadership and central leaders to effectively address caste violence in Manipur.

Biren Singh said, “We have decided that a small committee will be formed to meet the central leaders. The memorandum was signed by around 34 NDA MLAs.”

The Manipur CM said, “The MLAs in the meeting appreciated the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to resolve the Manipur issue. Amit Shah held a meeting with various agencies to restore peace.”

On 3 May 2023, communal violence broke out in Manipur. More than 200 people have lost their lives in the violence. The Manipur High Court on 27 March 2023 ordered consideration for inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list. After this notification, communal violence broke out in Manipur.

However, the High Court later quashed its order. A bench of Justice Golmei Gafulshilu struck down a paragraph from the order saying it was contrary to the approach of the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court.
