The 51st match of IPL 2024 was played between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). KKR won by 24 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. MI won the toss and elected to bowl. However, as Mumbai’s playing XI was announced after the toss, ‘Hitman’ Rohit Sharma was not in it. His name was included in the list of impact players. MI veteran spinner Piyush Chawla revealed that Rohit came as an Impact substitute due to back stiffness. He said in the press conference after the MI vs KKR match, “Rohit had some stiffness in his back, so this decision was taken as a precautionary measure, coming to play as an impact player, he did not bat.” He scored just 11 runs off 12 balls. Rohit caught Sunil Narine by Manish Pandey in the sixth over. Chasing a target of 170 runs, the Mumbai team was bowled out for 145 runs. Suryakumar Yadav (56) scored the most runs for MI.
Mumbai’s hopes of reaching the playoffs in the current season are almost over. Hardik Pandya-led MI have lost 8 out of 11 matches and are currently ninth in the points table. Mumbai will now play their next match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday (May 6).
