Afghanistan’s dashing all-rounder Mohammad Nabi wreaked havoc with the bat against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023 on Tuesday. Nabi, who came to bat at number six, played a blistering innings of 65 runs off 32 balls at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. He hit 6 fours and 5 sixes. Nabi created a big history during this innings. He became the fastest fifty scorer for Afghanistan. Nabi completed his half century with the help of 6 fours and 3 sixes in just 24 balls.

Nabi has broken the record of Mujibar ur Rehman. Mujeeb crossed the 26-ball 50 mark in an ODI against Pakistan last month. He is followed by star all-rounder Rashid, who scored a 27-ball half-century against Ireland. Along with this, the record of fastest ODI fifty in the world is registered in the name of AB de Villiers. In 2015, former South African veteran de Villiers scored a 16-ball fifty against West Indies. Sanath Jayasuriya (vs Pakistan in 1996) and Kulas Perera (vs Pakistan in 2015) have done this in 17 balls each.

Coming to the Sri Lanka vs Afghanistan match, the Dasun Shanaka Brigade secured a place in the Super-4 with a thrilling 2-run win. Afghanistan team has been eliminated from the Asia Cup. Chasing a target of 292 runs in 37.1 overs, Afghanistan were bowled out for 289 runs in 37.4 overs to enter the next stage. Sri Lanka achieved a thrilling victory by 2 runs. Afghanistan did not start well. Gurbaz (4) and Ibrahim (7) were out by the fifth over. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (59) shared 71 runs with Rahmat Shah (45) and 80 runs with Nabi. Nabi fell victim to Mahish Thikshana in the 27th over. Rashid (27 not out from 16 balls) was at his best in the end but could not avoid defeat.
