Former England spinner Monty Panesar ends his political career in just over a week as he announces he is withdrawing his name as a parliamentary candidate for George Galloway’s Workers’ Party of Great Britain. Galloway presented Paneser, 42, as his candidate amid much fanfare at Westminster last week. Former left-arm spinner Panesar was to contest the Ealing Southall seat in west London in the next general election.
However, Panesar decided to withdraw his candidacy after a series of challenging media interviews, in one of which he struggled to comment on Britain’s membership of NATO. Panesar wrote on X, “I am a proud British citizen who has had the honor of representing my country at the highest level of cricket, but I admit that I am at the beginning of my journey and still learning how politics can help people. ” .
“So today I am withdrawing my name as a candidate for the general election of the Workers’ Party,” said the former spinner. “More time is needed to find a coherent political home.”
“I want to be the voice of the workers in this country,” Panesar said in a recent column in The Telegraph, adding, “My ambition in politics is to one day become Prime Minister where I will make Britain a safer and stronger nation.” But my first job is to represent the people of Ealing Southall.”
