NEET, NET row: Central high-level panel meeting today on exam reforms-report

Amid controversy over malpractices in competitive exams, the education ministry on Saturday constituted a seven-member panel headed by former Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) chief K Radhakrishnan. The panel will work on necessary recommendations for transparent, smooth and fair conduct of the examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It is being said that the first meeting of this panel will be held today. It is also being said that it is expected to submit its report in two months. The recommended reforms will be implemented by the next examination cycle. Apart from this, the panel will also look into the exam calendar and give suggestions.

The panel will make recommendations on improving the examination process system, improving data protection protocols and the structure and functioning of the NTA. Randeep Guleria, former director of AIIMS-Delhi B.J. Rao, Hyderabad University Vice Chancellor K. Ramamurthy, Professor Emeritus, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT-Madras, Pankaj Bansal, Co-Founder of People Strong and Karmayogi India. Board member, IIT-Delhi Dean Student Affairs Minister Aditya Mittal and Joint Secretary, Ministry of Education Govind Jaiswal are other members of the panel.

In fact, in the NEET-UG examination held on May 5, students at these six centers complained of loss of time, after which the NTA gave them grace marks. After the controversy, a total of 1563 students were re-examined. The exam was conducted on Sunday from 2 pm to 5:20 pm. During this period, adequate security arrangements were made at all the centres. Meanwhile, the NTA on Sunday delisted 17 candidates appearing for the examination on May 5 at centers in Bihar. According to officials, these 17 candidates were barred from appearing in the examination after irregularities were detected.
