Parliament resumes proceedings today after recess, possibility of deadlock on thanks motion; Opposition adamant on debate on NEET

The first session of Parliament is underway after the results of the 18th Lok Sabha elections. The 10-day session started from June 24 and will continue till July 3. After a holiday on Saturday and Sunday, it will start once again from Monday. The Lok Sabha Speaker election was held on 26 June and on 27 June President Draupadi Murmu addressed a joint sitting of both houses. Now the motion of thanks on the President’s address will start from Monday. However, the NEET paper leak is being made a constant issue in the Parliament proceedings by the opposition parties and there is a constant uproar in the House.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur will open the debate on the motion of thanks on the President’s address in the Lok Sabha. Bansuri Swaraj, daughter of late BJP leader Sushma Swaraj and first-time member of the Lok Sabha, will approve the proposal. The Lok Sabha has allotted 16 hours for debate on the motion of thanks, which will conclude with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reply on Tuesday.

21 hours have been fixed for the debate in the Rajya Sabha and the Prime Minister is likely to reply (on the debate) on Wednesday. This week there was a big uproar in Parliament over the NEET issue. The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducted the NEET-UG on May 5, in which around 24 lakh candidates appeared. The results were declared on June 4, but after that there were allegations of question paper leaks and other exam-related irregularities in states like Bihar.

Opening the debate in the Rajya Sabha, BJP member Sudhanshu Trivedi called Modi “incomparable” and said that his approach to dealing with issues facing the country was very different from that adopted by the country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. BJP member Kavita Patidar supported the motion and nine other members have participated in the debate so far. On Friday, opposition members created a ruckus in the Lok Sabha demanding a debate on the alleged irregularities in the medical entrance exam ‘NEET-UG’, leading to the adjournment of the House for the day.

  1. The new MPs were sworn in on June 24 and 25.

Uproar in Rajya Sabha over NEET issue
The opposition protested strongly in the Rajya Sabha demanding a debate on the NEET controversy and Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge also came close to the chair along with his fellow members. Amid the uproar over the NEET issue, Chhattisgarh Congress MP Phool Devi Netam suddenly fainted due to high blood pressure, after which she was admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Members of the opposition parties criticized the government for not adjourning the proceedings of the House and not worrying about the health of the Rajya Sabha member.
