‘Participate in trials or prove your fitness..’ SAI gives ultimatum to Bajrang

New Delhi. Tokyo Olympics medal-winning wrestler Bajrang Punia is facing a flurry of concessions in Asian Games trials. The Sports Authority of India wants Bajrang Punia to take part in the trials for the World Championship and provide a fitness certificate if he wants to be exempted from training in Patiala this week. Let us tell you that Bajrang wants to skip the World Championship Trials on August 25 and 26 and instead wants to train abroad to prepare for the Asian Games starting on September 23 in Guangzhou.

Deepak Punia, who won a gold medal in the 86 kg weight category at the Commonwealth Games, is not interested in participating in the World Championships to be held in Belgrade from September 16. Instead, they want to prepare for the Asian Games as well.

Bajrang wants to train abroad for a month
Bajrang Punia has sent a proposal for training in Kyrgyzstan (August 21-September 28). On the other hand, Deepak Punia wants to train in Russia for five weeks from August 23 to September 28 in view of the Asian Games.

A Sai official told news agency PTI on condition of anonymity, “Yes, we have asked Bajrang Punia why he is leaving the World Championship trials. He has told us that he wants to train abroad for the Asian Games. But we have asked them to participate in trials on August 25 and 26 and go abroad for training on August 27.

The World Championship is the first qualification tournament for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and the SAI is unhappy that two of the country’s top wrestlers want to skip the trials and showpiece event. Wrestler Bajrang, who won a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, has sought to take physiotherapist Anuj Gupta, personal trainer Sujit Mann and strength coach Kazi Mustafa with him abroad.
