‘Preaching consensus, people not getting the message’: Sonia Gandhi on ruling party-opposition standoff in Parliament

New Delhi:

Congress Parliamentary Party chief Sonia Gandhi on Saturday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is ignoring the message of the mandate in the Lok Sabha elections and continues to emphasize the struggle and act as if nothing has changed. He also alleged in an article in the English daily ‘The Hindu’ that the 1975 Emergency was condemned in the Lok Sabha to divert attention from the Modi government’s attack on the Constitution and constitutional institutions.

Sonia Gandhi said in the article, “On June 4, 2024, the voters of our country made their decision clear and strong. This is a sign of personal, political and moral defeat for the Prime Minister who had deified himself during the election campaign.

He claimed that the order not only rejects such posturing, but is a clear rejection of the politics of division, discord and hatred and both the modus operandi and the modus operandi of Narendra Modi’s regime.

Preaching Consensus, But Importance of Confrontation: Sonia Gandhi

Sonia Gandhi said, “Yet the Prime Minister is behaving as if nothing has changed. It preaches the value of consensus but continues to value conflict. There is no evidence that he understood the results of the election or took into account the message sent to him by millions of voters.

She said, “I would like to remind the readers what the ‘Bharat’ coalition parties told the Prime Minister when their emissaries sought consensus for the presidency… We said we would support the government, but keeping in mind the tradition, it was appropriate and It was expected that the post of Vice President would be given to a member of the opposition.

Attempt to divert attention from attacks on institutions: Sonia Gandhi

“And then, the crisis was condemned by the Prime Minister and his party – surprisingly even by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha… The Constitution is an attack on its fundamental principles and values, the institutions it has created and empowered,” He said. This attempt to divert attention does not bode well for the smooth functioning of Parliament.

Sonia Gandhi said that it is a truth recorded in history that in March 1977 the people of the country gave a clear decision on Emergency, which was accepted without hesitation and clearly, and less than three years later the Congress which was in March 1977. Defeated, returned to power.

Referring to the NEET issue, he said that the Prime Minister who spoke of ‘Pariksha Pe Barkha’ is silent on the paper leak which has devastated many families across the country.

He said that ‘India’ does not want conflict in the alliance.

The Congress Parliamentary Party chief said, “Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has offered cooperation. The leaders of the constituent parties of the ‘Bharat’ coalition have made it clear that they want meaningful functioning in Parliament and fairness in the conduct of its proceedings. We hope that the Prime Minister and his government will respond positively.
