Questions raised again on spices from MDH and Everest, samples in Rajasthan questionable

Some famous MDH and Everest spices have once again been questioned. This time the spices of both the companies have been found suspicious in Rajasthan, India. After testing samples of the spice from both these companies, it was found to be “unsafe” for consumers, according to news agency Reuters.

The officer wrote the letter

According to a personal letter written by senior health officer Shubhra Singh to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Rajasthan state tested several spice samples and found a batch of Everest spice mix and two types of spices. Unprotected from MDH. He further said that batches of MDH and Everest were manufactured in Gujarat, Haryana. In such a situation the authorities of both the states should take immediate action against them. The letter is not public but has been seen by Reuters. However, no response has been given from Shubra Singh and FSSAI.

Many more companies on the radar

According to Food Safety Commissioner Iqbal Khan, spices of well-known companies like MDH, Everest, Gajanand, Shyam, Sheeba Taj were found ‘unsafe’ during the inspection. He said that the investigation found ‘acetamiprid’, ‘thiamethoxam’, ‘imidacloprid’, ‘tricycle’, ‘profenophos’ in vegetable masala and chana masala, ‘acetamiprid’ in garam masala of Shyam company. Spices, ‘Thiamethoxam’ and ‘Acetamiprid’ were found in Raita Masala of Sheba Fresh Company, ‘Ethion’ in Pickle Spice of Gajanand Company and ‘Azoxystrobin’ and ‘Thiamethoxam Pesticide/Insecticide’ in Cumin Spice of Everest Company. More than the prescribed quantity, which can be very harmful to health.

Bans have been imposed in Hong Kong and Singapore

On April 5, Hong Kong’s food safety regulator Center for Food Safety (CFS) said it found pesticide ‘ethylene oxide’ in excess of permissible limits in samples of two Indian brands of various canned spice products. It has asked consumers not to buy these products. In view of the CFS order, the Singapore Food Agency ordered the recall of the products.

These products were: Everest Fish Curry Masala, MDH Madras Curry Powder (Masala Mix for Madras Curry), MDH Sambar Masala Mixed Masala Powder, and MDH Curry Powder Mixed Masala Powder. After this, spice samples in India are also on the radar.
