R Pragyanandha vs Magnus Carlsen- 18-year-old Grandmaster Rameshbabu Pragnananda created history by defeating world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in the third round of the Norway Chess Tournament in Stavanger on Wednesday, May 29. This is Pragyananda’s first classical win against Carlson. The Indian grandmaster has taken the singles lead in the open section of the prestigious six-player tournament after Carlson’s historic win on his home turf. Playing with white pieces, last year’s FIDE World Cup runner-up struggled to beat Carlson.

This is a big achievement for Pragyananda who lost to Magnus Carlsen in the World Cup last year. Incidentally, Pragyananda is the fourth Indian to beat Carlson in classical chess.

R Pragyanandha scored 5.5 out of 9 at the end of the third round in the Norway Chess Tournament. Meanwhile, US Grandmaster Fabio Caruana finished second with a full three points after his victory over GM Ding Liren on Wednesday.

Magnus Carlsen, who paid the price for a bold opening move against Pragyanandha, has now dropped to fifth place in the six-player Norwegian Chess Open division. Pragyanand didn’t let himself be surprised by the opening as he kept his composure and got the job done. Despite trailing for most of the game, Pragyanandha won three important points by defeating Carlson with the white pieces.

Coincidentally, R Pragyanandha’s sister R Vaishali has retained her sole top position in the women’s category of Norwegian chess.
