Kingstown. The Afghanistan team has created a stir by reaching the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup. Who would have thought before the start of the tournament that Rashid Khan’s team would beat the likes of New Zealand and Australia to make it to the final four. Last month, Brian Lara surprised many when he tipped Afghanistan to reach the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup. Rashid Khan, the captain of the team who performed this miracle promised him that he would live up to his faith.
What Brian Lara said proved true and Afghanistan beat Bangladesh by eight wickets using the Duckworth-Lewis system in the last match of the Super Eight. The team not only made it to the last four of the World Cup for the first time but also knocked out giants like Australia from the tournament. This success of a war-torn country like Kabuliwala’s story will now be the share of cricketing giants.
“West Indies, India and England can reach the semi-finals,” Lara told PTI in May. My bet for fourth place is on darkhorse Afghanistan. I haven’t seen the grouping but given the number of World Cups Afghanistan have played in the past, this team is on the way to progress and could make it to the last four.
