Ricky Ponting-Justin Langer got no coaching offer from BCCI, reveals Jay Shah

Team India head coach Rahul Dravid’s tenure ends in June 2024 and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also started the search for a new head coach. BCCI has started inviting applications for the post of new head coach. BCCI Secretary Jai Shah said that this time a foreign coach can also get this post. After this, different names started being discussed in the media. According to media reports, the BCCI has approached former Australian cricketers Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer, former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming and Gautam Gambhir for the coaching post. Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer also openly refused to take the Indian head coach post, after which Jay Shah clarified that neither he nor any BCCI official had approached him for the post.

Jai Shah said in a statement, ‘Choosing the right coach for the Indian cricket team is a long process. We are looking for people who have a thorough understanding of the Indian cricket structure. It is important that the new head coach has a thorough understanding of Indian domestic cricket and should take the Indian team forward. In the Indian Premier League, Ricky Ponting is associated with Delhi Capitals, Justin Langer is associated with Lucknow Super Giants and Stephen Fleming is associated with Chennai Super Kings. Apart from this, if we talk about Gautam Gambhir, he is the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders. Whoever becomes the Indian head coach will have to leave the IPL franchise team.

Ricky Ponting recently told the ICC in an interview that there was a discussion during the IPL to find out if I was ready to take on the role. Both Ponting and Langer have refused to take over as the Indian head coach citing different reasons. However, according to Jai Shah, the BCCI never contacted him.
