The jobs of 16 employees of SAIL’s BSL, COL and SRU caught up in the promotion mess are at stake. Dhanbad CBI’s anti-corruption wing has registered an FIR and started probing the kundlis of these employees-turned-officers. After canceling the promotion exam, SAIL has already handed him a charge sheet with huge penalty. He may lose his job if the CBI proves the allegation of promotion by giving money as part of a criminal conspiracy.

Apart from these 16 employees, the CBI is also investigating unidentified officials and others of M/s Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited (BECIL), a mini-ratna company under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. The vigilance probe has raised suspicions that the irregularities in the promotion may be linked to the top management of SAIL. Many representatives of employees’ unions and officers’ associations have collected huge sums of money in return for promotion. Several union leaders, Bokaro Steel Plant, Durgapur Steel Plant, Rourkela Steel Plant and BSP body members and officers association representatives are under investigation. CBI will also identify such people. It has been revealed that 2.5 lakh to 3 lakh rupees will be charged from each candidate for promotion. External agents that play a role in the practice are also being identified.

The appointment scam in Bokaro Steel Plant is nothing new. From 2012 to 2015, there have been several recruitment scams. Influential people like former governor’s son and former MP were also employed on officer posts keeping in view the rules. The CBI has also filed a chargesheet in cases related to this appointment.

Officials who have flirted with each other in the past are also on the radar
SAIL Vigilance has sent its investigation report to the CBI. According to the report, some officials of the Directorate of Personnel, who were also involved in this game in SAIL earlier, are also suspected to be active in this examination. Investigation revealed that everyone at the cell headquarters tried to suppress the matter. CCS and D(P) Secretariat DGM Mukesh Kumar Chhabra, who holds a sensitive position in the personnel directorate, are also under investigation.

Shocked after showing photo of OMR sheet
The CBI is preparing to interrogate all the 16 promoted employees soon. Earlier, everyone was shocked when the vigilance asked the questions by showing the picture of their blank OMR to the candidates. Some candidates have told vigilance officials that they do not know how this happened. Some even said that they had no answer to give in the matter. Preparations are underway that the CBI team will soon question the representatives of the Cell and BECIL deployed in the process of written examination for promotion.
