Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud has said that the Supreme Court is a people-centric court by virtue of its diversity and is not multilingual. He said that Supreme Court judges are also talented. The CJI disclosed that Justice Amanullah has a license to fly an aircraft. The CJI was speaking at the felicitation of newly appointed judges of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Justice Ujjwal Bhuiya and Justice Bhati.

CJI Chandrachud said that a bench of judges from Maharashtra and West Bengal in the Supreme Court can decide on the Haryana case. This is the real essence of the Supreme Court. It is not a multilingual court but a people centric court. Each judge brings their own unique experience. People will have faith in the judiciary only if the justices reflect it. The judges say the appointments have brought diversity to the court.

He said that the recent promotion of Justice SVN Bhatti is proof that the institution of Supreme Court belongs to India and not just Delhi or Maharashtra.

The CJI said that such programs organized by the Bar are important to show the importance of unity among the members of the Bar irrespective of their language, caste, religion and identity. In his speech, CJI Chandrachud also expressed concern over the delay in obtaining residence in Delhi by judges appointed to the Supreme Court during the initial months of his tenure.

He said that newly appointed judges often have to stay in state government houses for months. He has to stay in Rajya Sabha for 5-6 months, though there is no dearth of reading and disposing of his petitions. There is no straight answer.

The CJI said that the judges of the Supreme Court reflect the diversity of the country. The Collegium’s mission has been to ensure that we represent the richness and diversity of India.

He said that many people are criticizing the Supreme Court for being a multilingual court. They should also see the other side of it that the reason we are multilingual is not because no two judges are the same. In a case of Haryana in the Supreme Court, the judges of Maharashtra and West Bengal are sitting together in one bench.

The CJI said that the Supreme Court of India aims to reflect the diversity of the country. Every judge who comes here brings with him his own experience. He said that despite being a multi-lingual court, the Supreme Court is a people-oriented court and this is the basic element of the Supreme Court.
