Former all-rounder Shahid Afridi has criticized star Pakistan batsman Babar Azam for taking over the captaincy from Shaheen Afridi ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024. Pakistan team has been eliminated from the group stage in the ongoing tournament. Pakistan team led by Babar Azam lost both their opening matches. America and then India defeated it. Pakistan won the third match but by then it was too late. India and USA managed to qualify for Super-8 from Group A.
After Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup 2024, Afridi has criticized Babar Azam as the team’s captain again. He was stripped of the captaincy for failing to qualify for the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup. Shaheen was made the captain of the T20 team.
Shahid Afridi said on his YouTube channel that Babar Azam should have supported fast bowler Shaheen Afridi when he was being dropped and then reintroduced. This will increase his respect and set an example. If PCB had said he will be captain till T20 World Cup then I think Babar should have supported Shaheen. He should have said, “No, if you have made him (Shaheen) the captain, we are ready to play under his captaincy because Shaheen has been playing with me for a long time.”
He continued, “If he is made the captain and the selection committee has made him the captain, then yes I will support him and play under his captaincy. Babur should have adopted this attitude.
