Indian vice-captain Smriti Mandhana welcomed the suggestion of a World Test Championship in women’s Test cricket, but England veteran Tammy Beaumont said such a competition was unfair when only three countries were playing Tests regularly. The ICC World Test Championship in men’s cricket began in 2019–21. Currently its third session is going on. There is no such competition in women’s cricket. In women’s cricket, only India, Australia and England play regular Test cricket, although they too have long intervals.

“I want to be a part of the World Test Championship but that has to be decided by the board and the ICC,” Mandhana said while talking to the media ahead of the Indian team’s practice session. He said, “I have seen. There is a lot of men’s Test cricket but it will be exciting to be a part of such competition. But this decision will have to be taken by the administrators.” Test match will be played between India and England. The Indian team is hosting the Test after two years. The England team is playing a Test after six months.

“I don’t think it’s the right time,” said Beaumont, who has played eight Tests since making his international debut ten years ago. Currently only three or four countries are playing Test cricket continuously and three or four boards can host women’s Tests. The ICC will have to invest heavily in this and I don’t think they will.”

Beaumont said, “They are still working to grow T20 cricket worldwide and the focus should remain the same. I would like to do a bilateral series of different formats. As we play Tests, ODIs and T20s against India and the overall winner comes out of it. Similarly, there should be series against other countries as well.
