Stock market today: Stock market recovers after initial decline, Sensex rises 250 points, Nifty crosses 22,400.

Stock Market Updates: Midcap and smallcap indices witnessed a tremendous rally today.

Today i.e. May 17, benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty fell in early trade on Friday amid weak global cues and continued withdrawal of foreign investors. BSE Sensex) closed down 185.42 points at 73,478.30 points. The NSE Nifty fell 50.35 points to 22,353.50.

However, the market saw a recovery and the Sensex rose 200 points to 73,942. At the same time, Nifty is also trading at 22,471.

Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank, Nestle, Hindustan Unilever, Larsen & Toubro and Bajaj Finserv were the biggest losers among Sensex listed companies. While shares of Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, Tata Steel and Ultratech Cement rose.

The midcap and smallcap indices have seen tremendous gains. The Nifty Midcap index rose 204 points or 0.40 per cent to close at 51,357 points and the Nifty Smallcap index gained 151 points or 0.87 per cent to close at 16,747 points. Among the sectoral indices, there was a big jump in Auto, PSU Bank, Metal, Realty, Media, Energy, Infra and Oil & Gas. While there was a decline in IT, FMCG, Pharma, Fin Service and Private Bank.

According to stock market data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were sellers in the capital market on Thursday and bought Rs. 776.49 crore shares were sold.
