Stricter rules to stop spam calls and SMS, preparation to connect companies with AI digital platforms

The Department of Telecom is busy preparing a concrete plan to curb spam calls and SMS across the country. For this, telecom companies will be compulsorily connected with Artificial Intelligence (AI) based Digital Consent Platform (DCA). Apart from this Chakshu portal will also be updated.

It may be noted that TRAI directed implementation of this DCA platform to prevent spam and large volume of telecalling. DCA is an integrated platform to capture, maintain and revoke consent given by consumers to receive commercial calls or SMS from any company or business.

It is introduced so that the user can control who can send him messages and who cannot. However, the customers have not been able to benefit from it yet. At the same time, TRAI has questioned the slow pace of telecom companies joining the platform in this regard.

A new committee will be formed

Now a new committee is expected to be formed by the Department of Telecommunication in this matter so that there can be better coordination. The committee may include the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.

It is being said that this committee will work on preparing draft guidelines for phone calls and WhatsApp made over the internet. This can also include telecom operators.

Chakshu portal will be updated

The department is also planning to continuously update Chakshu Portal. The portal enables people to register complaints about fraudulent communications or suspicious phone calls or SMS of such communications received from mobile numbers or social media like WhatsApp, but it is feared that it may also be misused by unwanted elements. To avoid this, the portal will be updated to strictly monitor not only fraud but also bulk spam from specific numbers.
