Such an object fell from the sky on the house, the person was shocked, sued NASA

Washington. The American space agency NASA holds many records. People in the field of space science hold this agency’s name in high regard. However, now NASA has dealt a major blow to one person, after which he has filed a case against the space agency. This person is a resident of Naples, Florida, USA. He has demanded compensation of $80,000 i.e. about Rs 67 lakh from NASA.

According to media reports, the incident took place on March 8 this year. A large piece of space debris fell on Aleandro Otero’s home in Naples. The debris left a hole in his house from the ceiling to the floor.

700 grams of goods and so much loss
Aleandro was on holiday with his family at the time of the incident. Only his son Daniel was present in the house, who called him and informed him about this. Otera told a local TV channel, ‘I was shocked to hear this. I was completely amazed. I was wondering what fell on our house to cause so much damage.

When Alejandro got home, he found a cylinder measuring 4 x 1.6 inches, weighing about 1.6 pounds, or about 700 grams. He was wondering where this thing came from that destroyed his house.

Cylinder released in 2021, dropped in 2024
NASA later confirmed that the cylinder came from its space station. He said it was used to mount old batteries on cargo pallets. It was launched from the 2021 space station. Such an object burns up completely as soon as it enters the Earth’s atmosphere, although after traveling in space for about 3 years, a piece of it survived and landed on the property of the Otero family.

Underscoring the seriousness of the issue, Otera family lawyer Micah Nguyen Worthy said, ‘My clients are seeking adequate compensation for the stress and impact this incident has had on their lives. They are thankful that no one was physically injured in the incident, but such a situation could have been catastrophic. If the debris had fallen a few feet in the other direction, serious injury or death could have occurred.

Worthy also said the case is intended to set a precedent for space debris claims in both the private and public sectors. NASA has been given six months to respond to the compensation sought by the Otero family in the case.
